x680 rom hacking FAQ
What is it?
A technique which implemented by the BAO team way back 1994 that uses
japanese OS like system in order to hack roms
(or any japanese proggie), a method that don't need a font/graphic
editor (we will discuss it later).
Do I really need to use this method?
Well it depends it supports 1BPP graphics. btw you can try it.
Requirements:
DOS 6.0 (really old huh?, of course you need to reinstall your windows
98)
diskeditor of norton utilities 8.0 for DOS (I know its old I'll try
to look at the archieves and upload it.)
aileen
(Japanese DOS system)
How it works?
1. Load aileen
2. Run diskeditor v8.0 for DOS
3. let's say we load the tenchimuyo rom
BEFORE
Surprise!
You can see the fonts now (so I told before that you don't need to
edit the fonts) btw what aileen do (as i know)
it supports 1BPP tile. lets go to address 000403C0 then press TAB,
you'll be ported to those japanese text
I'm sure you know a bit of japanese so you can see the name of Tenchi
over there at 2 kanji's, starting at 403C0
to 403C4. btw here at x680 using 1 kanji is equivalent to 2 hex and
vice-versa to letters, look below.
AFTER
This is the hacked tenchimuyo now.
The names of Tenchi, Ayeka, Ryoko and Sasami won't fit with this example
(rom expansion is up to you)
so lets say TC = Tenchi, AYK = Ayeka, Ryoko = RO and Sasami = SSM.
is that OK?
let's concentrate with TC(tenchi) you'll notice that its big compared
to "no" and "desu" at 00040460,
TC has 4 hex
T = C4 82 (2 hex)
C = 73 82 (errr.....look at the picture)
Example 2: Front Mission Weapons
BEFORE
You see this highlighted japanese text now change it.
AFTER
Do I need to explain this....it's common sense.
What ROM did they hacked with this method?

NOTE: BAO started to translate/hack EMIT into English and Filipino way back 1994 but not as a serious project until they went online last 1996 then they know about the other groups such as RPGe and Demiforce. the group may not be the first in the internet but through the whole world.
